French Drain Systems
Is a French Drain Right for You?
Do you have puddles or wet ground for long periods of time after it rains? A french drain system might be the best solution for you. French drains are underground drain systems that offer subsurface drainage functions without the unsightly appearance of a surface drain. Because all elements of the system are below ground, french drains can remove subsurface water, which helps firm up soft spots and dry out deeper soils that surface drains cannot reach. Despite their many positive qualities, french drains are not appropriate for every drainage application. Contact us today for a free consultation in choosing the best drainage system for you!
System Construction
There are a number of ways to build french drains. We believe that anything worth doing is worth doing right, so we use only the best methods and materials to ensure a long functional life for the systems we build. We start by digging a 16” wide trench to maximize water permeation into the drain. We then line our trench with a filter fabric to keep sediments out of the gravel and pipe. A double wall N-12 HDPE pipe then goes in the bottom of the trench. We backfill the trench with washed #57 gravel, fold filter fabric over the top of the trench and then finally finish backfilling the trench with topsoil. Sometimes our competitors will skip the fabric, use a cheaper pipe, or a narrower trench. We cannot recommend these things because every part of the french drain plays an important role in the functionality and longevity of the entire system.
